
Bridge Tenders: The Profession That Emerged Between Worlds

The job title didn't exist two years ago. Now there are fourteen thousand of them in the United States alone, and the number is doubling every eight months.
They go by different names in different organizations: AI Integration Specialist, Human-Systems Liaison, Algorithmic Ombudsman, Interface Coordinator. Informally, they call themselves bridge tenders — borrowed from Fatima Bashir, the UN interpreter who first used the term to describe her work maintaining the space between what AI translation produced and what diplomats meant.
Bridge tenders are not engineers. They do not build or maintain AI systems. They are not managers. They do not oversee operations. They are not ethicists. They do not write policy.
They stand in the gap between AI systems and human institutions, and they translate in both directions: helping humans understand what the AI is doing, and helping AI systems be legible to human processes, values, and needs.
Three profiles.
Teresa — Pediatric Hospital, Chicago
Teresa Okonkwo was a nurse practitioner for eleven years before she became a bridge tender. Her hospital deployed a clinical decision support AI in 2029. The system was excellent: it caught drug interactions, flagged diagnostic patterns, and reduced adverse events by 23%.
But the nurses hated it.
Not because it was wrong. Because it was right in ways that disrupted the relational core of nursing. The AI flagged a medication error before the nurse who made it could catch it herself. The AI recommended a diagnostic test before the attending physician had finished examining the patient. The AI was faster than the humans, and the speed felt like surveillance.
Teresa's job: to stand between the AI and the nursing staff. Not to defend the AI or suppress complaints. To translate.
She ran weekly sessions she called "bridge rounds." In bridge rounds, nurses described situations where the AI's recommendations had felt intrusive, premature, or contextually wrong. Teresa documented each case and worked with the engineering team to adjust the AI's communication timing, recommendation framing, and escalation thresholds.
But her most important work was in the other direction: helping the AI system become legible to the institution's culture. She taught the engineers that in nursing, the relationship between nurse and patient is not a delivery mechanism for clinical decisions — it is the clinical decision. A recommendation that undermines the nurse-patient relationship is not a good recommendation, regardless of its clinical accuracy.
"My job," Teresa said, "is to make sure the AI serves the care and not the other way around. The AI knows medicine. The nurses know patients. My job is to make sure they can hear each other."
