In January 2027, the UN Secretariat introduced real-time AI interpretation across all six official languages, with plans to extend to 40 languages by year-end. The accuracy was extraordinary: 99.2% semantic fidelity, near-zero latency, perfect grammar, and consistent quality that never degraded from fatigue.
Fatima was offered a generous severance package. So were her seventy-three colleagues.
She took it. She lasted four months.
The recall
In May, the AI interpretation system produced a translation of a speech by the Chinese ambassador to the General Assembly that was semantically perfect and diplomatically catastrophic.
The ambassador had used a phrase — liǎng guó zhī jiān de lìshǐ wèntí — that the AI correctly translated as "historical issues between our two countries." The translation was accurate. It was also wrong.
In the diplomatic register the ambassador was using, the phrase was a coded reference to a specific territorial dispute that had been the subject of backchannel negotiations for six months. Every human interpreter in the room would have flagged the subtext: the ambassador was publicly reopening an issue that had been privately settled. The statement was an escalation disguised as a platitude.
The AI translated the words. It missed the move.
The delegation that should have responded to the escalation heard a generic reference to history and moved on. The backchannel collapsed. Three months of negotiation evaporated.
The Secretariat contacted Fatima in June.
The new role
Fatima's new title was "Senior Interpretive Liaison." Her job was unprecedented: she worked alongside the AI interpretation system, not replacing it but interpreting its interpretations.
The AI handled the linguistic heavy lifting — grammar, vocabulary, speed, endurance. Fatima handled what the AI could not: the political, cultural, and institutional context that determined what words actually meant in this room, on this day, between these specific people.
She developed a system. She listened to both the original speech and the AI's translation simultaneously — a cognitive feat that even her colleagues found remarkable. When the AI's translation was semantically accurate and contextually complete, she let it pass. When the semantic accuracy masked a contextual gap, she annotated.

Q: Some people say you're a glorified spell-checker for the AI.
A: Those people have never been in a room where a misunderstood sentence could start a trade war. Language is not words. Language is words plus who is saying them, to whom, in what room, with what history, in response to what provocation. The AI translates words. I translate situations.
Q: Can the AI learn to do what you do?
A: It can learn to do some of what I do. It can learn that certain phrases have secondary meanings in diplomatic contexts. It can learn that certain speakers use certain patterns. What it cannot learn — what I have spent nineteen years learning — is how to read a room. Not the words in the room. The room itself. The tension between delegations that have not spoken to each other in a week. The posture of an ambassador who arrived late and angry. The absence of a delegate who should be present. These are not in the transcript. They are not in any dataset. They are in the air.
Q: Are you worried about your job?
A: My old job is gone. Translation as a purely linguistic task — that's over. But interpretation as a human activity, the act of understanding what someone means rather than what someone says — I think that may become more important, not less. Because the AI is so good at the linguistic part, people now trust the translations completely. They've stopped listening for subtext. They've outsourced the surface and forgotten the depth. Someone has to watch the depth.
Q: What do you call what you do now?
A: I call myself a bridge tender. I maintain the space between what was said and what was meant. The AI built a beautiful bridge across the language gap. But a bridge needs tending, or things fall through the cracks. I tend the cracks.
The profession that emerged
Fatima was the first, but not the last. By the end of 2028, every major international institution employed interpretive liaisons — humans who worked alongside AI translation systems to preserve the contextual, political, and emotional dimensions of communication that linguistic accuracy alone could not capture.
The role attracted a specific personality: people who lived in the space between systems. Former diplomats who understood institutional subtext. Therapists who could read emotional undercurrents. Anthropologists who recognized cultural codes. Journalists who could hear what wasn't being said.
They were not translators. They were not editors. They were not AI trainers. They were interpreters in the oldest sense of the word: people who stood between worlds and made meaning cross the gap.
